Overview of Casa del Horno
This comfortable home is named after the impressive bread oven in the kitchen. It has wonderful countryside views and has been enjoyed by the current owner for 21 years, a retired surgeon and now a musician and writer. The property offers a year round home especially, if the buyer seeks a country setting without the need to care for land and extensive gardens (just 250M2 outside space). The outside space of this home comprises a large covered alfresco lounge/dining/relaxation terrace of 25M2 and a sunny smaller roof terrace above the workshop. Other than that, there is a mature tunnel of grapes and avocados that fruit profusely each year.,
The house is 163M2 with three bedrooms on the first floor and a cleverly built and styled bathroom on the ground floor. A spacious living/kitchen/dining room features a large historic bread oven that cooks pizzas, bread and slow roasted meat superbly. Or the bread oven can be used to heat the entire house with ease.
The 4th bedroom is an occasional single bedroom with daybed in the workshop.
There is a fireplace and wood burning stove in the living room and another open fireplace on the first floor where the three bedrooms are located within the house.
The walls are very thick and keep the property cool in summer and warm in winter. Some of the rooms are beamed and this home has an honest homely feel about it and simplicity in layout. It is ideal either for a single person or a family who want to host visitors from time to time.
If being able to quickly and easily walk to a local bar venta is important to quality of life, then this is the property for you. Just around the corner, 5 minutes walk is El Bar Zahori where delicious wine is served, having been produced from the grapes grown all over the hillsides of the area. If ordered, Maria Luisa will cook much enjoyed seasonal dishes of the area for lunch or dinner.
From the roof terrace above the workshop of the house, you will see birds of prey soar above you and hear exotic birds also. Yet, you are only 5km from the bustling and vibrant coastal town of Castell de Ferro where everything needed for modern day living is to be found and of course, a beautiful beach! Also, 20 km away is a superb golf club, tennis club and a host of cultural activities in Motril.
The drive down to Castell de Ferro is an enjoyable excursion in it’s own right. It is partly along the dry riverbed that is graded into a wide track for some of the journey. Only after rare heavy rains is it necessary to wait for the river to subside for a couple of days before setting out. The only traffic you are likely to encounter are a heard of goats crossing the road!
This is the description of the current owner
Casa del Horno has existed for centuries, and is marked on the oldest maps available. Originally, it was a venta, hostelry where travellers could find food and shelter. Casa del Horno was previously the old stable where 2 mules, a donkey and 3 goats were housed, and which I purchased in 2001, together with these animals.
I am not just selling a dwelling. I am also selling a way of life. Whoever buys my home, horno will also have access to an inexhustible fund of local knowledge – from Healthcare to Lawyers and much beyond. How to best purchase a fat lamb for roasting, for example ….. and the list goes on.
My local and national knowledge is worth a lot, if the buyer does love Spain.
The building has a classic old bread oven in perfect working order inside, which is rare in Andalucia. Hence the name of my dwelling, Casa del Horno. Every village used to have its communal, wood-fired bread oven, but they were usually built outside. The horno, or bread oven located in what is now my kitchen and dining room is perfect for cooking pizzas, or roasting meat, as well as heating the whole
building in winter. The almond wood I use for fuel lies all around the hills, and needs only collecting.
I spent two years completely restoring this ancient edifice with Oché, a local Spanish builder, me living above on the top floor and the animals below. This has now been my comfortable home for 21 years and the animals are long gone, but health and old age have finally driven me into the pueblo, village of Castell de Ferro. Hence the sale of Casa del Horno.
It is now a 4 bedroom house, built in the traditional manner, complemented by two terraces that over-look the almond-covered hills surrounding the house. There is a 2,000 litre water deposit and enough land to build a piscina, pool (subject to permission).
It is a wildlife paradise, full of a variety of birds from hoopoes and bee-eaters to eagles and vultures. Also red-legged partridge and wild boar.
My neighbours are all farmers, the very best of people, generous always, and my friends of many years. My good neighbours are Antonio and Maria Luisa who own El Bar Zahori, a very unique hostelry and a source of much ribald humour as well as delicious vino costa, all produced from the vines which cover
the surrounding hills, and if course, Maria Luisa’s home cooked meals!
This rustic but comfortable home is just 10 minutes drive down a tarmac lane to the beach
at Castell de Ferro.
Looking north you take in the vista of Mount Lujar – at 1,850 metres above sea-level.
Size : The edifice : 163M2 housem over two floors with two terraces of 25M2 that is covered plus 8M2, sunny roof terrace.
There is also a separate outbuilding, a gazebo/workshop/occasional single bedroom of 11,66M2
The structure of Casa del Horno is built in the traditional manner, the walls are 80 cms thick, being
constructed of huge stones and terracotta, not using concrete blocks as they generally do with all newer buildings. The insulating qualities of this traditional method are excellent. The rear half of the property is sub-terranean, and therefore the whole house is extremely well insulated from both heat and cold with the interior temperature varying by just 10C during the whole year. This summer whilst the outside
temperature was between 30 – 35 C the temperature inside never exceeded 24C. In winter the temperature never falls below 17 C. There has never been any need to use either central heating or air-conditioning,
as so many other more modern build houses require. As a result the running costs of the house are very low indeed.
Access: is from Castell de Ferro, follow the Gr-5206 to Los Carlos bridge, take the right fork and follow until the tarmac ends. La Venta is 500 metres beyond, off the dirt road, at the junction of Barranco El Ferrer and the Rambla of Rubite. ** In winter, if the rains are heavy, the rambla drive riverbed runs, and without a four wheel drive one may need to wait for a day or two. It has never been a problem.
